Connections through music

Elly Franchimont.

Sharing song is one of the most healthy and joyful things in life. Making connections around Australia and the world, through song, is one of my great passions.

I live in a small rural community on the mid north coast of NSW Australia near Port Macquarie, where I conduct community choirs, Bella Bago choir. I also formed an a capella group that I sing with called Wednesday. I regularly invite some of the best contemporary choral conductors from Australia, the USA, Fiji, New Zealand, Samoa and the UK to conduct singing workshops in my community and I connect with community choirs in other countries through organising overseas singing holidays.

I started my singing career in the early 80s and am now a much loved and seasoned performer of many musical styles ranging from Eastern European Folk to Rock & Roll, Blues, Gospel and Jazz. I perform regularly as a vocalist with Jazz ensembles and duos.

Music has always been a part of who I am and, since arriving in Australia from the Netherlands in 1980, I have immersed myself in a very wide variety of vocal work. I started busking in Sydney almost as soon as I got off the plane, covering songs from Joni Mitchell to Joan Baez and many more. I was part of establishing a women’s vocal group called Mesana Salata. The group sang songs from all over the Balkan area. The technique used is often called ‘Open throated Bulgarian voice’. I have sung the Blues, Rock & Roll, Country and Jazz. The jazz style still draws me in deeper all the time.

During the second half of the ‘90s I became increasingly interested in a’cappella music. I love hearing music that is totally created by voices. When it really comes together it makes my spine tingle. In 1995 I established my first a cappella community choir called Voice Works in Katoomba, Blue Mountains. I taught singing at Adult Education Colleges and at the Blue Mountains Camp Creative.

I moved to Wauchope on the mid north coast at the turn of the century (2000) and have established 2 community choirs here., Bella Bago choir and Out of the Shower choir. In 2000 or 2001 I was one of four vocal workshop facilitators at Choral Convergence at Yarrahapinni. I have facilitated song-writing workshops, Bulgarian voice workshops and also teach on an individual basis. I arrange for choir and also write my own compositions. I have a very dynamic teaching style.

I am passionate about bringing people together through song. Now I concentrate on organising vocal workshops/holidays facilitated by leading choral conductors from all over the world.
